Mario

The Character Princess Peaches is used as a way of moving around the game as Mario and Luigi's task is to save the damsel in distress. The player takes on the role of Mario, the protagonist. The objective is to race through the Mushroom Kingdom and survive the main antagonist Bowser's forces and save Princess Toadstool. The player moves from the left side of the screen to the right side in order to get to the flag pole at the end of each level. The game is suitable for almost any age as it doesnt conform any real type of violence, or bad behaviour that younger children may copy and it is not seen as being influential and promoting any drug use or bad language.

Violence is used in a very suttle way, things like gaining fire and ice powers therefore shooting the rivals and makign them either freeze or fall off the screen. As for other enimies Mario simply jumps on top of them, making then unconcious, for a few seconds.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Structure : Visually there are gun fights, blood on the screen and disturbing images which show violence in many different ways (psychological or physical). There are also instant replays which replay and focus on the kills. The audio of the game features violent sound effects ,e.g gunshots, explosions and sounds of pain (screams).

Target Audience : The game is classified as an 18 + meaning the target audience must be over the age of 18, also the themes of the game are mature.

Issues: the game play could be influential towards younger children, although the game is an 18 children younger are still expected to see the game and it may cause an issue. although the game is relatively gore less compared to many other games on the market.

GTA

Issues - The game revolves around harsh and bloody violence, consisting of one man running around the city beating up, and assaulting innocent victims. Within the game you are allowed to shoot, stab, blow up and punch up people as you complete levels. This game could potentially promote violent behaviour towards a younger generation that may be playing the game. Although the game is rated 18 it is evident that parents will buy the game for their children. The violence displayed on screen could be influencial towards them and cause them to unintentionally act out aggressively.

Target Audience - The game is rated 18 by the BBFC, however this is only due to the amount of graphic violence within the game. The actually intended audience is for teenage boys as they are more likely to enjoy playing video games regularly.

Gears-of-War.jpg
The bbfc classified this game as 18. One of the reasons for this would be the content of this game for example; the gore detail and amount within the game would not be suitable for younger ages, the use of language within the game for example swearing also would not be suitable for audience younger than 18, this would also be influential behaviour. the target audience for Gears of war would be boys aged 18 and over. one of the reasons for this would be that it contains the theme of war and conflict, this would usually attract a male audience however this is a common stereotype and there might be a variety. one way in which we could recognize the representation would be through the narrative for example, the narrative revolves around battle and conflict which would reflect the representation of violence. The costume that the characters wear would also represent violence for example all the characters are wearing battle uniform and you would associate with violence. The setting would also attract the target audience for this game for example; the settings are derelict destroyed buildings. also the colour scheme would not attract a female audience as it is dull and the variety of colour is not vary big. the styles within the game would also be targeted for a male audience for example during game play there are curtain realistic aspects, such as the fact that the characters are part of a squad and use tactics and particular formations that the audience would reflect and recognize to be army and war related.

Representation of violence and or women in video games - Call of Duty

Call of Duty Black Ops

Call of Duty Black Ops is a first person shooter game which was developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. Due to the content being based around war and shooting the classification for the game is an 18 by the BBFC. After its first 6 weeks of release Activision reported that the game had reached $1 billion in sales. There is a campaign mode in the game which a single player takes the role of different characters throughout the game to complete the story. There is also online and offline multiplayer games modes, with the online game the players split into two teams with which they can play various games such as capture the flag.

The rating of 18 comes from the fact the game includes strong bloody violence and strong language. The target audience are casual gamers who like action and shooting. Although the age classification is an 18 the actual audiences age range starts at around 14 years old, which is really young considering the content of the game.

The main issue that may surround the game is the likelihood of the users behaviour being influenced. This is especially the case in users whose age is below the classification.

Portal - Sam and HollyyyyyyYyyyYYyYy

The classification is 12+ this is because there is minimal si-ficirific violence.

Portal represents violence in a comical way the enemies don't seem aware that they are attacking anyone or causing any violence they are simply complying with their programming.

We recognise this representation of violence because they shoot you in the face. The use of violence is obvious to the audience this is shown by the antagonist who is speaking to you throughout the game giving you useful information about the different ways that you can die in the game.

The game will not influence the audience because all of the violence is sci-ficirific and so the audience will not be able to imitate the violence that is in the game.

The genre is Action/Platform/Puzzle game.

Representation of violence and/or women in video games.

Tomb Raider.

how do we recognize this representation within the structure? the game portrays the main character Lara Croft in a very positive light, due to the animation making her very feminine looking, so she is definitely recognizable as a woman, however the nature of the game is very violent and the actions the player has to take to get through the game are conventionally very masculine (shooting animals, people and climbing around everywhere)

the target audience for the first Tomb Raider game would generally be around young teenagers, the BBFC classification is 12, due to the bad graphics causing the game to be less frightening, and you don't really see any references to anything unsuitable for young people to see. 12 is the target audience i think because nobody younger than that would be able to work the controls of the game in all the complicated ways, such as controls of movement and maneuvering the character around, as well as this there isn't anything unsuitable or rude about the game. the game is based around role play, as the player controls the actions of the character, this makes the target audience somebody that would be interested in action games, and role playing within an action story.

i think there may be a few issues around the game, a classic issue would be that young males can perv on the character in the game, as there was a very popular rumor that a code involved in the game structure enables the character to become naked, however this rumor was not true and was hastily put to rest/. she is quite a sexual kind of character, due to her skimpy costume of little shorts and a tight top, as well as the way she makes audio noises when she is jumping around and such, which may be seen as quite sexual.

when you look at the original tomb raider game and then look at the most recent released, it is plain to see that the graphics quality has improved, however they have also changed the appearance of Lara Croft slightly. although she clearly wears the same clothing her face has been made to look more like a model wearing makeup, she is clearly more feminine in her build due to her more skinny looking arms - generally they have tried to make her more attractive, and if anything more realistic to the target audience - which may also affect the rating of the game, due to this increase in sexually attractive characters.

Representation of Violence and/or women in video games.

Tomb Raider

The central character in Tomb Raider is the British archaeologist Lara Croft, a female adventurer in search of ancient relics used by Thor, the God of Thunder, King Aurthur and many others. Lara was created by one-time Core designer Toby Gard, and grew out of a number of ideas discarded in early concepts. She appears almost invariably with brown shorts, a dark green or blue sleeveless top, holsters on both sides of her hip for dual wielded pistols which carry almost 30 bullets together, and a small brown backpack. Over the course of the series, her 3D model has undergone gradual graphical improvements, as well as enlarged (and later reduced) breast size.
Lara croft is represented as a sexy female, with plain facial features, and has the moves of a gymnast.

The certificate the video was given by the BBFC is 16+. This is because of the level of violence and sexuality featured within the game. The primary target audience for the game is teen boys, as they enjoy playing alongside Lara and watching her performance stunts. The secondary audience is teen girls who aspire to be like Lara croft, and playing in her shoes.

The issues which may surround this game include imitable behavior, especially because of the violence and taking dangerous risks.
The game could also encourage perversion as young girls may see the image of lara croft, and copy the way she dresses. Also, within the first few Tomb Raider games a butler follows the character around, and boys may pick up on this behavior which is socially unacceptable.

And this be are awesome Tomb Raider experience in word form!! Hope you enjoyed it Cigdem :)

Production

Distribution: The commercial activity of transporting and selling goods from a producer to a consumer

Production: The creation of value or wealth by producing goods and services

Consumption:
Consumption - How the audience take in the media, meaning the consumers of video games are the audience that buy, play and download the game.

Distribution - How the consumers get hold of the video game, whether it's online, in stores etc. The distributor is the one who works in selling the products to the consumers in retailers, in stores or online. The publisher is usually responsible for the distribution within the gaming industry.

Production - Creation of the product, how it was made.

production.
there are many different ways in which companies produce there products, there are also different types of production that companies use for example; the tent pole model, this is when companies release one block buster game for the consumers, then the profits from their blockbuster product goes into other creative games. another form of production is that companies independently develop games. Usually requiring a developer to a have a publishing contract in order to pay for the development and the license fee required to develop for a particular console. However, now there is a growing ‘Indie Game’ market thanks to open source software, Apples App Store and Xbox Live Marketplace small teams and even individuals can create games, get them distributed and make money.

Marketing.

Marketing is the process which happens throughout the development and usually lasts until the game is shipped; marketing is also the most expensive part of game publishing; This is because they have to buy the advert in a form such as: television advert, a banner advert , promotions online and instore promotions.Advertising may cause the total cost to double due to the fact that advertising costs more than expected in some cases. However people are prepared to pay as it is the most effective way of capturing the audiences attention.

Distribution.
this is one of the last processes that companies go through when they produce a game. Distribution is how the companies get their product on the market (in stores and online). retailers would usually sell a brand new game around $30, A lot of time, money and effort is put into making sure publishers are in good with these distributors, however the bottom line is often that if your game sells they'll want to buy it. Or, if at least one of your games sells really well, then they'll want to buy or be forced to buy others.

Consumption.
Is what ways people use the game; consumers are anyone who buys, plays or downloads the game. there are many ways in which "the audience" can consume the product for example; you can buy games in stores, also you can buy these products online , some websites would be, Amazon, Game and Play.com. you can also buy some games from specific networks on consoles for example on xbox live games are available.

Quite possibly the best blog in this blog world x')

PRODUCTION <3

When you produce a video game, you need to include various aspects that will appeal to your target audience!!!! Whether this be the conventions of the video game, the design, the genre etc.

DISTRIBUTION/MARKETING

It can be very costly which can even double the cost of making the game, especially TV advertisement, however this is the most affective way of getting your game to the public. It happens during the development process.
It includes all the buying of advertising in the form of banner ads and promotions online, television commercials, local radio commercials, magazine print ads and pullouts, and in-store promotions, displays and advertisements.

CONSUMPTION

Nowadays games can be brought and played on many different platforms, such as now they can be brought on the internet using sites such as Amazon and Play.com.  And nowadays games can be played online using social network sites such as Facebook and Myspace.

Stacey & Lynsey Research

Production

This is how the game is produced. there are many different methods used to produce s video game. One method may be that a publisher releases one game which ensues heavy marketing and investment, so that the money made from this may fund the next perhaps more risky game they develop. normally a publisher will be involved in the development, but occasionally you can get developers that begin on a project without a publisher. There is a risk is that their game might never be released, but it gives more creative freedom for the developer and a lack of deadlines. Until recently games development was very expensive, needing a developer to a have various contracts and such,  but now there is a growing ‘Indie Game’ market which means that small teams of people, and even individuals can create a game and distribute it themselves.

Distribution/ Marketing

A distributor works with retailers (shops, online) to make product available for the consumers to purchase. In the games industry the Publisher usually handles the distribution.

The main methods of marketing for games was originally through the packaging, nowadays there are many different ways that video games companies market their products, via facebook, television adverts, billboards, posters, etc. The marketing of a game is often the most expensive aspect of creating a video game.

Consumption

This is how the consumer (audience) interacts with a given video game whether it be that they have downloaded, played or bought the game. the most popular video game products tend to aim for the most mainstream audience of video game players, which are the younger generation, generally male.

Research Into Production, Distribution/Marketing and Consumption - Done by SaaAAaaAam a...d...n ShonnaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAaaaAAaAaaa

Production - The production company are the people who create the game. They have different
teams of people depending on the size of the company. They will have to produce the story for the game this would involve script writers who would need to write the dialogue for the characters, give descriptions for the areas and the story. Given the information the production company would usually get artists to do impressions of what they think the different locations would look like. Basically they make the game.

Distribution, Marketing and Consumption - They distribute the game in several ways, this has been evolving since the beginning of the games industry. In the beginning to access video games you would usually have to go to a arcade and they would not be accessible at home. Now you can access video games in several ways; these would include owning your own console at home and then getting the software in stores. You can also access them on your pc using online stores such as steam or amazon games. They market the games using online means such as social networking sites by creating pages for people to 'like' or advertisements on website such as play.com or amazon. They can also market games using advertisements on TV; these adverts would be created specifically to be targeted towards the audience that the game was created for. They would also be put onto TV at a time and on a channel to suit the audience. They can also use guerrilla marketing to advertise the games these would usually be targeted to a specific area such as central London where people would be most likely to see it. Guerrilla marketing consists of many different and innovative methods of getting the message across to the audience.

E3 the huge yearly games expo is on later this month, it's where all the big games companies showcase their upcoming titles and give us a glimpse into the near and long term future of the industry.

THE GAMES INDUSTRY

Introduction
The games industry, once a niche form of interactive entertainment often dismissed as being for children or teenage boys, is now a multi-billion pound industry that rivals the film industry in terms of revenue and prestige.

Institutions
The games industry is made up of the following institutions:

Developers
Games are created by development studios comprised of software engineers, artists and programmers who write the code, create the structure and animate the game making them playable for gamers.

Publishers
These are companies that are responsible for the marketing and distribution of the game.

Distributor
A distributor works with retailers (shops, online) to make product available for the consumers to purchase. In the games industry the Publisher usually handles the distribution.

Hardware manufacturers
While developers create software, other companies create the hardware that the games run on.

Distribution
The final cost of publishing a game that we'll delve into is the distribution of the game, and that's the process of getting the game sold to wholesalers and then to retailers where you'll then have a chance to buy it. Wholesalers typically pay around $30 per game and with the costs of getting the goods to the wholesalers, any co-op advertising or marketing, and return of good contingencies being roughly $14 per game, the publisher is going to typically get $16 for every unit sold.

Consumption

The BBC have investigated how people play videogames and also what type of games we play. The report is a PDF file and features a number of differnet profiles of gamers. The age range of players is varied and covers ages 6-65.

Videogames are not just about randomly conquering worlds, beating your best friend at Mario Kart or even being unbeatable at Pro Evolution Soccer. They can have another purpose and cover current affairs, one example of how this can be done is by using a game such as The Movies where one user, Koulamata has created a movie about the French Riots that happened last summer.

Tomb Raider Legends - Review

Genre - Action/Adventure. The publisher was crystal dynamics and the developer was eidos.

Story - Lara Croft as a child was with her mother when she dissapeared after the appearance of a mysterious portal. Years later she decides to go back to where her mother dissapeared to find out what truly happened. In a race against time, Lara must travel the globe to unearth hisory's greatest weapon. A legendary artifact of such immense power it could threaten humanity's existence.

Gameplay - In this game you will be using Lara to kill animals, people and monsters. using a variety of guns. You will travel the world traversing a variety of environments. You will be solving a variety of puzzles all created to keep you captivated.

Graphics - The graphics of the game are good for the time that it was released. The textures can sometimes be blurry if you move up close to them but if you're playing through the game without looking at the textures. The animation of the character models was pretty smooth except for the animals. They were a bit jumpy and would sometimes clip with the environments.

Controls - The control layout for the game was good it was very intuitive so you wouldn't have to spend a long time learning the button layout.

Canis Canem Edit (TM)

Genre:
RPG - Real time. The title is Canis Canem Edit. The manufacturer is Rockstar. It is no part of a series of games.

Story:
A new boy starting at a private school, learning how to associate with other people through violence and mischief. It has a linear story.

Gameplay and controls:
It is a fun game with simple controls. Single player mode only. Available on PS2 and Xbox original.

Graphics and sound:
Poor graphics on circular objects (heads are slightly pointed). Voices aren't synced with the mouth movements. Sound quality overall is not bad. Smooth animation, when hitting another student they react immdiately. Colours are dull in most areas.

Conclusion:
Before purchase would want to know how long the story is (game time in hours), features (what you can do in game e.g. weapons you can use).

Rating:
4/5

Red Dead Redemption Video Review

We reviewed Red Dead Redemption, it is an action adventure western video game.  It was developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar games.  It was released for the PlayStation3 and Xbox 360 on May18th 2010.  It is part of a series because there was a previous one called 'Red Dead Revolver'.  It's a role play game.  It's a real time game.  It's a first person shooter.

Most of the game's story takes place in the year 1911, during the decline of the American Old West. The game follows John Marston, a former outlaw, while he sets out to hunt down his former gang members. Marston's wife and son are taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a bounty hunter. Having no other choice, he sets out to bring his three former gang members to justice.

Red Dead Redemption is an open world game. Players can interact with the environment and engage in combat with enemies, using various firearms. Different breeds of horses are the main forms of transportation, which come in a variety of quality. These horses must be tamed, however, in order to use them. Swimming is not an option, as the protagonist John Marston cannot swim — he will drown if he ventures too far into deep water.  It's a one player game unless you're online then it's a 2-16 players game.

The graphics were fairly high quality but the colours sometimes were too dark especially at night time.

If we were going to buy this game, key elements we would want to know are, the game storyline and the objectives and how many players, and what rating it is and also the genre.

Game Review: Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto IV is an action adventure role-playing video game produced by Rockstar. It is a single player game with the option to play online multiplayer. The UK version of this game is classified as 18 and was released on 29th April 2008.

The storyline of the game is the character Niko Bellic has arrived in America from Europe hoping to escape his past. Although there are storyline missions which are necessary to progress through the game and unlock certain content and parts of the city, they are not required, as players can complete them at their own leisure.

The game is set up to be played viewing the character from a third person perspective, however it can be set up as 1st person. The controls are complex and yet easy to pick up, with a lot of possible actions for the character to perform. The platforms for this game to play on are playstation 3, xbox 360 and windows.

The graphics are very high quality as is the sound. however there are some glitches involved when changing the camera angle, falling into lakes and general sharp movements. The visuals aren't particularly bright, although apart from the glitches the animation is smooth. Within the sound you can hear the pedestrians talking, car noises and the general noises you would associate with being in the street.

Manhunt Video Games Review

GENRE:
Title = Manhunt
Manufacturer = Rockstar Games
Type = Crime/killing
Role play
STORY:
A linear story-line about a guy trying to find his killer.
Run away, hide and fight characters to stay alive.
GAMEPLAY & CONTROLS:
The game is played from the guys position, the camera enabling you to view your character and its surroundings.
It is fun for the first few minutes, but it is very repetitive and boring after a while.
It can be played on PlayStation2, XBOX and PC.
GRAPHICS & SOUNDS
The animation is pretty smooth.
The colours are pretty dull, but this does add to the atmosphere.
No graphical bugs have been noticed.
A non-diegetic soundtrack is used, which incorporate diegetic sounds where necessary to create realism.
Stylized text does appear to alert the audience of failed or new missions, as well as controls and can be put in place instead of dialogue.
